There was a kick off with the Marathon Coalition, which is an organization that helps train and support 21 different organizations that have charity runners. This is definitely different than 2007/2008, when virtually all of my training was solo. At the time I was proud that I was able to train without what I perceived was the crutch of needing someone else to motivate me. Anyone that knows me knows I HATE to need people. However, now that my kids are in the public school system I have more of an appreciation for the concept of community. So this time I'm going to take advantage of these group runs. I went to the first one yesterday and I must say it was a more pleasant experience than running alone. Both my parents (divorced when I was 9) are fiercely independent and I definitely share that gene. However, I see where it has gotten them...living alone with minimal social contact and I don't envy them. I know I can do it on my own, so why not improve my training experience. I guess that is part of the difference now...I've already proven to myself I can do it alone. So, why not take the edge off what is a challenging undertaking. As I said before, I like to take the stairs instead of the elevator...maybe a compromise is to walk up the escalator?
